Dedicated Long Distance

A full dedicated long distance (local loop) T1/T3 connection consists of 24 voice inbound/outbound channels. Dedicated voice channels are run along two pairs of either copper, fiber, microwave (wireless), or infrared transmissions. These channels are carried digitally or optically through what is called a "channel bank" which decodes the signals into analog. The decoded signal is then passed through an analog PBX (Private Branch Exchange) system that has been installed at the location of the dedicated long distance POS. This process of decoding digital signals is called PCM (Pulse Code Modulation).

One important aspect of a local loop dedicated long distance line is the interopability of information needed to receive all the voice channels at the same time.

The process that makes dedicated long distance local loop interoperable is called multiplexing.

Multiplexing compresses the dedicated long distance voice channel information without altering the information itself allowing large call volumes to travel together on the same local loop L. D. line and end-user network paths.

Multiplexers are placed in long distance companies, local carrier companies and the subscriber's premises. Multiplexers must match for the dedicated voice information to be integrated properly.

An example of dedicated T1 multiplexing might include 24 different call centers in a building sending 24 different long distance phone calls at one time.
