Dedicated Line

A dedicated private line is basically one dedicated or more private lines running exclusively between two or more end user locations providing secure voice communications.

All private point-to-point lines are exclusive, therefore all communication between those lines remain secure. Communications cannot be transmitted to, from, or otherwise shared outside a dedicated private line. Point-to-Point does not run through a shared access network therefore the line remains entirely in the infrastructure of the customer premises.

There are different configurations for point-to-point. Point-to-Point is one line connecting two locations. Multipoint is the use of more than one private line connecting more than two locations. The Star Configuration is used when all locations within a private line connect to a central location. The Mesh design offers more redundancy and connects all private line locations in a nonhierarchical manner.

Transmission of voice, video, and data over a dedicated point-to-point are faster, more reliable, and offer more convenience to the end users than switched services. Per minute toll charges for voice, video, and data are bypassed within a dedicated private line and are instead charged on a flat monthly basis.

Point-to-point dedicated private lines are priced based on two main scenarios, Inter exchange miles and local channels.

Local channels at the end of a dedicated point-to-point are necessary for each dedicated line. Local channels run from the point-to-point customers premise to the carrier's equipment.

Inter exchange miles are basically POPs (Point Of Presence). This mileage is priced on the distance between each point of a dedicated point-to-point line.
