DSL means Digital Subscriber Line. DSL was created in 1989 originally designed for transmitting video and television signals for video on demand, however, the application found it's real purpose as another means for high speed Internet access and hasn't changed since.
DSL is a dedicated line used for accessing the Internet at high speeds which has earned it the alias, High Speed Internet. DSL services almost always use a splitter or better known as modem which allows the use of voice and data over the same line.
DSL Types
DSL Lite - This type of DSL is your all around basic service. DSL Lite runs upstream on the Internet at 384Kbps and downstream at 1Mbps. Higher speed is obtained for G.shdsl.
ADSL - This level of DSL is for subscribers wanting higher speed than DSL Lite. ADSL runs upstream on Internet at 176 to 640 Kbps and downstream at 1.54 Kbps to 7.1 Mbps.
SDSL - This DSL service can be transmitted at a further distance than most other DSL services, but does not include voice. Upstream transfer for SDSL goes up to 1.1 Mbps and up to 1.1 Mbps downstream.
IDSL - This level of DSL also referred to as ISDN is used when the central office is too far for SDSL. Like SDSL there is no voice with this service. Upstream runs at 128 to 144 Kbps and downstream runs at 128 to 144 Kbps.
These are not all the levels of DSL services readily available, but are the more commonly used.
Cable High Speed Internet is an Internet connection provided via cable line. Cable High Speed Internet can be faster than conventional DSL lines, however there are a few things about Cable Internet that you should know.
High Speed Cable Internet has an always on connection, meaning that your computer never has to connect or dial out for Internet access.
With high Internet speed and an always on connection you are vulnerable to hackers and viruses far more than on other typical high speed DSL Internet connections.
A good precaution is to buy a physical (electrical) firewall for your computer along with having firewall software installed. Also for Cable high speed Internet, it is absolutely vital that you have anti virus software installed and updated frequently.
Satellite High Speed Internet is an Internet connection available via a satellite dish. Essentially, your cable line from the satellite dish is what connects you to the Internet at high speeds as well.
There is varied debate on the quality of speed for satellite Internet, however, in rural areas and counties, satellite dish is the only means for high speed Internet.
The same precautions to be made with High Speed Cable Internet should also be made with satellite and DSL high speed Internet.
